Fire Standards
BS 5839-1:2002 Fire detection and fire alarm systems
for buildings. Code of practice for system design, installation,
commissioning and maintenance
This code of practice applies to the retrofitting,
extensions and alterations of existing systems in respect
of the design, installation, commissioning and certification
of the new work.
British Standard 5839 Part 1 : 2002 (Fire detection
and alarm systems for buildings) has recently been re-written
and updated to embrace many new practices and technology
within the design, installation and servicing of fire
systems.
The new code has made many positive changes, which
are good for installers and users of such systems. Most
notably is the increased flexibility of design, inclusion
of new technologies and a strong emphasis on contractual
processes and false alarm management. The general layout
of the new code provides commentary, recommendations,
normative and informative references designed to provide
easier navigation around the document.
As time has passed and many new and significant developments
have been made in areas of detection technology, the
code has embraced new methods to help reduce the number
of false alarms , including carbon monoxide detection,
which is now fully recognised as a legitimate form of
detection.
BS 5839-1:2002 is being amended to reflect significant
changes and to provide greater detail and clarification
so that users gain a better understanding of the issues
surrounding the design, installation, commissioning
and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems.
This new edition of BS 5839-1:2002 incorporating amendment
1 provides the following significant changes:
- Clarification of how the connections between detectors
and remote indicators should operate
- Clarification of the signal transmitted by the
control equipment under fire conditions
- An explanation of the permitted variation in detector
location where access for maintenance is difficult
- Clarification of the PH30 and PH120 classification
when testing fire-resisting cables
- An explanation on who issues mains supplies certificates
- More detailed information on aspirating fire detection
system inspection and testin
- More detailed information on control and transmission
equipment for tactile alarm devices provided for people
with impaired hearing systems.
